Permeation and diffusion behaviors of hydrogen and deuterium in molten FLiNaK

Abstract

Abstract: Background: Molten FLiNaK is a secondary heat-transfer fluid of a molten salt reactor or a FLiBe self-cooled nuclear fusion reactor, in which tritium would be produced at high rates and permeate the molten FLiNaK. Purpose: The aim is to provide more reliable reference for tritium behaviors in molten FLiNaK by further study of the permeation and diffusion behaviors of hydrogen as well as the isotope effect on hydrogen behaviors. Methods: Experiments on hydrogen charged at salt surface and metal surface in molten FLiNaK were conducted to study permeation and diffusion characteristics of hydrogen isotope in molten salt. And contrast experiments between hydrogen and deuterium charged at metal surface were carried out to study the isotope effect on hydrogen behaviors. Results: The results showed that hydrogen charged at salt surface had more advantages for reporting the permeation and diffusion characteristics of hydrogen. And the diffusion coefficients and solubility constants of hydrogen in molten salt FLiNaK could be correlated to =1.62×10^-5exp(-48.20×10³/R_gT) m²·s^-1 and =6.18×10^-5exp(-11.14×10³/R_gT) mol·m^-3·Pa^-1. The deuterium showed little isotope effect on the permeation and diffusion behaviors of hydrogen in molten FLiNaK. Conclusion: The permeation and diffusion characteristics of tritium are analogous to the hydrogen behaviors, indicating that hydrogen can be used forsubstituting tritium in the experimental researches in molten FLiNaK.
