Simulation study on the characteristics of reactor control drum based on 3KEYMASTER platform

Abstract: Background

Reactor control is one of pivotal issues of the nuclear reactor science, and various reactivity control devices are developed as multiple reactor types.

Purpose

This study aims to understand the operation and control characteristics of the control drums in miniaturized special power reactors by simulation modeling technique to analyze the principle and key parameters.

Methods

By object-oriented and modularized modeling in advanced simulation platform 3KEYMASTER, the model of reactor control drum was established, then it was coupled with reactor core system program and proportional integral differential (PID) controller. The reactivity disturbance simulation test was done on this coupled system under a stable nuclear power. Finally, the variation trend of nuclear power, control drum reactivity, control drum angle, were obtained together with core data such as disturbance eliminating time and power overshoot. Conclusions

The simulation results show that all functions and characteristics of control drum are realized in the established model. The reactivity value and driving mechanism of control drum are rational and controllable, the response speed of eliminating disturbance is fast, and the reactivity control function can be implemented effectively.
