EPICS historical data archiving system based on big data platform

Abstract: Background

The history data archived in an experimental physics and industrial control system (EPICS)-based control system for large-scale facility could reach the size of terabyte (TB) over a long period of time. For a large number of history data, the RDB Channel Archiver does not perform well in data retrieval.


This study aims to implement a stable data storage as well as a faster retrieval system on solid fuel thorium molten salt reactor (TMSR-SF0).


First of all, the Archiver Appliance (AA), a new generation of archiving system, was studied in depth and applied to TMSR-SF0 instrument and controls. Compared with the RDB Channel Archiver, the AA system achieved faster retrieval speed, richer web interface including system status view, intuitive chart display, etc. Then, based on the depth analysis of AA system structure, factors related to the query rate were found and verified. Finally, a real-time monitoring tool was developed to display a process variable (PV’s) value change on the web. The concurrency performance test and query performance test were performed on the web interface.

Results & Conclusions

The overall performance of AA system is proved to be better than that of RDB Channel Archiver.
