Total α and total β radioactivity level in atmospheric aerosol around Yangjiang nuclear power plant

Abstract: Background: As an important content of radiation environmental monitoring in nuclear power plant, the atmospheric aerosol radioactive level has attracted much attention. Purpose:This study aims to find out variation regularity and affecting factors of total α and total β in atmospheric aerosol 5 km around the Yangjiang nuclear power plant. Methods: Radioactivity concentrations of total α and total β in the atmosphere aerosol of Daao village and Yunbo village monitoring stations were collected by a large flowrate data sampling instrument using particle trapping cellulose filter paper with more than 95% high efficiency, and measured using low background α/β measuring device in the date range from January 2014 to December 2016. Results: The concentration ranges of total α and total β were 0.01-0.35 mBq·m-3 and 0.05-2.46 mBq·m-3 respectively. The annual average concentrations were 0.07 mBq·m-3 and 0.65 mBq·m-3. The radioactivity concentrations of total α and total β reflected obvious seasonal variation-all of the maximum monitoring data occurred in the winter due to the influence of the rainfall. Conclusion: Results indicate that there is no significant change of total α and total β in the atmosphere aerosol samples and the operation of the Yangjiang nuclear power plant is safe.
