Effects of 60Co γ-rays irradiation on the structure and properties of polymers used in fiber optic gyroscope

In order to prove references for the design and screening of nonmetallic materials used in fiber optic gy-roscope, the effects of 60Co γ-rays irradiation on the performance of nonmetallic materials used in fiber optic gyroscope was investigated. The change of surface morphology, molecular structure and mechanical properties were analyzed by SEM, FT-IR, TGA and mechanical property test, and the aging mechanism properties of polymer caused by irradiation were analyzed. The results indicate that after 1000 Gy(Si) 60Co γ-rays irradiation, the morphology of all polymers are almost unchanged, but according to the FT-IR, TGA and mechanical properties test, the degradation reaction occurred in main-chain and side-chain of silicone rubber, and the crosslinking process occurred in the principal chain of epoxy resin adhesive. However, there is only little change for the properties of acrylate resin coating adhesive.
